Google Play strives toward a significant policy change that can greatly enhance the NFT realm. The Android app store has finally revealed plans to enable developers to integrate digital assets within games and applications.
The updated contract states that businesses will soon be able to provide tokenized asset transactions to expose their blockchain presence via Google’s Play Console, empowering collaborators to reassess traditional games with user-owned content and enhance user loyalty with exclusive NFT rewards.
One notable collaborator behind this regulatory change is Reddit, best known for success in the NFT realm through its Avatar collectibles and marketplace. The Senior Engineer Manager of the social media hub recently highlighted that the upgraded guidelines aim to be “a fair playground that nurtures user trust and encourages responsible blockchain technology use.”
Google Play’s Change of Heart
Google’s take on blockchain-based apps has recently been non-transparent, stating that “developers should not advertise or glorify any potential earnings from gaming or trading activities.” This also aligns with Google Play’s policy regarding real-money games, contests and gambling, previously claiming that apps that don’t meet such eligibility requirements cannot support in-game items, like a ‘Loot Box’ for players to win NFTs.
In spite of these earlier requirements, it’s apparent that the app store has had a change of heart toward Web3 initiatives. The reasons behind this bold statement include providing the decentralized data storage app ArDrive Mobile with a spot in Google Store in 2022. The platform then listed ‘Axie Infinity: Origins’ in selected Google Play markets, followed by Google Cloud debuting a Web3 scheme in April 2023 to accelerate blockchain startups.
